About this treatise

This treatise is one of the deeply philosophical writings of Allāmah Sayyid Ḥashmat ʿAlī, dealing with the complex topic of the night Ascension of the Prophet (ṣ) in a philosophical manner. The philosophers have said that the Prophet (ṣ) did not have an ascension with this material body, but that he had a bodily ascension in another body (jism-i-mithālī) and offer certain rational arguments for this. In this epistle, Allāmah Sayyid Ḥashmat ʿAlī seeks to reply to and explain the arguments of the philosophers and discusses the issues of Prophethood and the ascension from a philosophical perspective. The Islamic philosopher Avicenna, or Ibn Sīnā, had already written a similar treatise concerning the Ascension of the Prophet (ṣ). The author has followed the philosophical school of Ibn Sīnā and Mullā Ṣadrā in his views. The word Miʿrājīyya comes from Miʿrāj, referring to the Ascension of the Prophet Muḥammad (ṣ) to heaven. The treatise is partially in Arabic and partially in classical Urdū, which is not how Urdū is generally written or spoken today. Being fluent in both languages has allowed me to translate it to the best of my ability and I have tried to find the original sources for quotations and reference them where possible as well as explaining certain matters that I felt needed clarification due to the confinement of the English language. In some places, the Arabic I have included may have a few differences from the one in the text since the author is quoting another source, and when I went back to the source being cited, I found that the printed edition today reads a bit differently. Despite this, the differences are negligible and do not cause a change in the meaning and mostly involve either small errors of transcribing or small diacritical differences.
